 Civic Innovation Network

Citizen Engagement, Collaboration for Urban Challenges

CIN is powered by Pierre-Alexandre Klein, Khushboo Balwani, Ellen Anthoni and many others.

“In the past few years, transition actors have risen to address the challenges our cities face. However, until now, these projects have served as individual trees, whereas current circumstances require us to think in the context of a forest. The challenges we face are systemic in nature. We have been applying single enterprise or single sector approaches without reflecting on the interdependencies in our complex systems. Achieving real impact in a city requires unprecedented collaboration and holistic thinking. Our vision is to push the city of Brussels to innovate at the systemic level in order to boost collective well-being and solve local problems in light of global challenges.” The Co-Founders

Civic Innovation Network (CIN) is a Brussels-based experimental project designed to foster collaboration between disconnected actors in order to tackle the systemic challenges of the city. While the city is full of innovative projects, yet many are unable to harness their desired impact due to complex frameworks and disconnection between institutional actors. CIN started by mapping projects before bridging the gap between these projects and many potential partner actors. The unimagined collaborations that ensued triggered 15 “Joint Impact Ventures”, involving more than 50 different stakeholders in Brussels.

In 2019, the CIN gave birth to BrusselAVenir. They depict new narratives for Brussels that acknowledge the complexity of our technology, politics, culture and environment. Every four months they crowdsource a question that addresses our lives in the city in 2030. Future imaginaries have power in inspiring innovation and shaping our societies. Let’s harness the same tools to imagine future stories so that we can positively influence the cultural and sociological aspects of our lives! Some of these future stories will make you smile, while others will make you pause and think, but the hope is that people of Brussels would start owning these stories and make them happen.

Lunt Foundation vision

Society is shaped by culture. Culture is shaped by our beliefs. And our beliefs are shaped by the stories we hear. In order to transform our society we must transform our culture, which means transforming our beliefs. Our beliefs change when we hear new stories, that open up our vision of what is possible. Many solutions to today's challenges already exist. What is needed is for the stories of these solutions to be spread. By expanding our awareness and imagination, new narratives elevate our consciousness and capability co-create a new future.

Lunt Foundation support

In 2017, 2018 and 2019 the Lunt Foundation provided financial support to secure the salary of the core team.
